New group for teens living with T1D

D Batteries is a connection group for individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) exploring creative chats, games, and crafts. The intention of the group is to make friends, share stories, ask each other questions, and form relationships –It just happens to be that these new friends’ bodies also have T1D.

The group’s meetings are designed to be casual, fun and playful. We celebrate the individual wins each T1D Battery had for the week/month and continue on with games and crafts for the remainder of the night. Future events will host local businesses promoting inclusion, fitness, or wellness through various presentations, exercises, or cooking demos.

Lead facilitator, Peter Rossetti, is a graphic artist who has been managing his diabetes for almost 20 years and is a member of one of the largest groups for T1Ds on meetup.com. That group only exists for adults with T1D in New York City, which mean the teenagers of Westchester, Fairfield and the Hudson Valley are under served along with millions of other diabetics who are not coming together.

The belief and purpose of the group is that Big things are powered by D Batteries connecting. The Google definition of connection is, “a relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something/someone else.” This idea of connection is important to an individual’s development since we are naturally social creatures and can commonly feel stuck or isolated with diabetes. Sometimes making new friends is a challenge although having the link of diabetes forms an unspoken bond that other T1Ds already understand.

The meeting place for D Batteries, will be in White Plains, NY at the beautiful creative space known as The Digital Art Experience. The Digital Arts Experience aims to provide a unique opportunity for the kids & teens of the Westchester, Fairfield and Hudson Valley communities to explore the world of creative technology, digital art, STEM related fields, and more!

As of now, the group is currently for teenagers with T1D and, of course, parents are welcome. The meetings will held on the 3rd or 4th Thursday of every other month and you can start connecting right away by joining the Facebook group fb.com/groups/DBatteries. There you will find updates, cancellations, and future tips and positivity. Also be sure to RSVP for December’s event on Facebook or by emailing T1DBatteries@gmail.com
