Welcome to the JDRF One Walk Bucks County Countdown! This week we are spotlighting our Bucks Walk volunteers and all that they make possible. Today, we celebrate those who donate their time and talents to the planning and execution of this community event—our 2018 One Walk Bucks County Chair!

As one of the most impactful volunteer-driven organizations in the world, JDRF depends on volunteer passion to drive our mission—and talent to keep us going.

The 2018 JDRF One Walk Bucks County Chair is the incomparable Amy Butterworth. As Event Chair, Amy partners with JDRF staff and committee members to achieve the event’s revenue and recruitment goals. Working with our Family Team Committee, Amy helps identify and secure new family and school teams as well as provide stewardship to existing family teams. Additionally, Amy drives new corporate support, leveraging her personal and professional contacts to secure funding for the Walk through sponsorship and corporate team fundraising.

Read below to find out more about what volunteering for JDRF means to the Butterworth family, as shared by Amy:

My son, Dylan, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 2009 at age four. We became involved with JDRF to connect with others who are affected by T1D. Our first Walk was in 2009 in Philadelphia. We found the Bucks Walk in 2010, and we’ve been walking and volunteering to help raise money for a cure for T1D ever since.

I first volunteered for JDRF as a mentor for newly diagnosed families. Through the T1D Connections mentor program, we were able to connect with other families affected by T1D. We have been there through the ups and downs, the good and the  bad. The friends we have made through this program are our strength.

From my Outreach role, I have moved onto chairing One Walk Bucks County. I’ve gotten to know so many families over the years that Walk Day has become a reunion for all of us who are in this fight together! My favorite part of the Walk is setting up the Faces of Diabetes signs. I get to see the faces of the people we love and are walking for a cure!

Our family is a team which battles the ups and downs of T1D. We volunteer at One Walk Bucks County as a family, and we enjoy sharing time with other T1D families.

Amy is an RN, BSN, CNOR, and RNFA at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, PA.
