Chief Strategy Officer, ARMI | BioFabUSA; Co-Founder, Good Measures; Author; Advocate; Mother of a Child Living with T1D

Shaheen is an advocate, entrepreneur, and business leader. As Chief Strategy Officer for ARMI | BioFabUSA, Shaheen is working to realize the promise of biomanufacturing to deliver life-changing therapies for the worldā€™s most costly chronic diseases, including the manufacture of insulin-responsive beta cells for diabetes. She co-founded Good Measures, a company harnessing the power of food as medicine. Good Measures was awarded a suite of patents by the U.S Patent Office and Shaheen is a named inventor. She was inspired to launch Good Measures following her eldest daughter's diagnosis with type 1 diabetes.

Shaheen has dedicated herself to making life better for people living with diabetes. She authoredĀ The New York TimesĀ bestseller, ā€œElle & Coach,ā€ about the experience of parenting a child with type 1 diabetes. This also led Shaheen to join the Board of Trustees for Joslin Diabetes Center, the worldā€™s preeminent diabetes research, clinical care, and education organization. She was the 2011 National Chair of the JDRFā€™s Childrenā€™s Congress, served on the Advocacy Committee of the International Board, and is currently a member of the Greater New England Chapter Community Board.

Shaheen served on the Portsmouth New Hampshire City Council and as Chair of the Police Commission. New Hampshire Governor Lynch appointed her, and she became Chair of the Stateā€™s Commission on the Status of Women.

A graduate of MITā€™s Sloan School of Management and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Shaheen was also a Division I Scholarship Athlete. Shaheen and her husband live in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where they raised four children.

Ellen Oā€™Donnell, Ph.D.

Psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, Instructor at Harvard Medical School, Living with T1D since age 21

Ellen H. Oā€™Donnell, Ph.D., is a pediatric psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. She is Director of Psychological Services for the MGH Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Center and for Shriners Childrenā€™s Hospital, Boston. She co-directs the MassGeneral for Children Pediatric Behavioral Medicine Program and the MGH Internship in Child Psychology. She is an Assistant Professor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School.Ā  Dr. Oā€™Donnellā€™s interests include developing and evaluating interventions for children and adolescents affected by medical illness to improve quality of life and health outcomes. She is also interested in ways that positive parenting practices protect children against problems in adjustment. Dr. Oā€™Donnell works with patients with a variety of pediatric illnesses but is especially interested in the challenges of having T1D since she is living with the disease herself.

ATTENDEE CHECK IN

  • Check In opens at 8:30 a.m. All attendees are required to check in.Ā Ā 
  • To expedite the check-in process, please have only one member from your party check in on your group’s behalf.Ā 
  • After checking in, you will receive a name tag. If this is your first time attending the summit, we encourage you to take a First-Time Attendee ribbon for your name tag. In addition, grab a beaded necklace to showcase your connection to T1D.Ā

  • Limited, light refreshments will be available at TypeOneNation Summit. Please prepare accordingly.Ā

Join us for a free half-day, in-person, educational summit event, bringing together all within the T1D community. Learn about research advances, participate in discussions with experts, and meet others living with or caring for someone with T1D. Educational sessions will be focused on T1D care and management, and will be geared for different audiences. The summit will also include a vendor fair featuring industry and community partners.

The educational program will be geared toward an adult audience. Youth and teens are welcome to join and meet others with T1D but must be accompanied by a parent / caregiver.

Welcome Remarks | Dean Kamen

As Founder and Chairman of the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI), Dean and the ARMI team are making real the promise of regenerative medicine: manufacturing cells, tissues, and organs to fundamentally transform healthcare and ultimately cure T1D. With JDRF support, ARMI is working to translate the manual process to create stem cell-derived beta cells into a robust, reproducible, and automated procedure, for the eventual development as a replacement therapy for people with T1D.
