3rd and 4th Quarter Chapter Updates

Here’s what has been going on at JDRF Hampton Roads lately!

 

August

23th-26th: Loveland Ride

Cecil Ward and Alli Dawson participated in the Loveland, CO ride and both made it the full 100 miles and raised over $9,000! Congrats, guys!

30th:  Youth Ambassador get-together and kickoff

Our Youth Ambassadors got together for the first time in August. They made posters for our awesome Ride Team and wrote letters to former Congressman Scott Taylor urging him to protect those with pre-existing health conditions when he votes on Healthcare decisions.

September

13th-16th Saratoga Ride

Alex Bitterman, Frankie Carr, Sandy Oliver, Dr. Paul Rein, Jane Rinaca, Dr. Maggie Morris Fears, Dr. Marta Satin Smith, Keira, Logan, Susan and Troy Mann, all rode in beautiful Saratoga Spring, New York in September. We are so proud of all of their hard work training for the event and fundraising over $30,000!!

30th: Peninsula One Walk Kickoff

We met with over 20 families at Buckroe Beach in Hampton to talk about the One Walk Virginia Beach, and to tie dye shirts! We had so much fun with the new families who were in attendance and a few long time supporters as well!

October

4th: 2019 Hope Gala Kickoff

We kicked off the 2019 Hope Gala season at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Sky Bar. For more information on how to purchase tickets, please visit our gala website.

14th: One Walk Virginia Beach

This year’s One Walk was AWESOME! We had over 1500 people come out to Neptune Park at the Oceanfront to Walk with us. We crushed our $189,000 goal and have raised over $200,000 with money still coming in! Be sure to check out photos on our Facebook page here.

18th-21th: Death Valley Ride

Board Member Steve Sparkman was daring enough to do the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes in Death Valley, Utah this year. He raised over $6,000 and made it all 100 miles! Way to go, Steve!

On November 20th, Slover Library in Norfolk lit up BLUE in honor of JDRF. Thanks, Slover!

3: Ride meeting

6: Research Update with Dr. Doug Culling

Our adult group met to hear about new research opportunities, grants, and to hear a general research update from Dr. Doug Culling. Dr. Culling is a board member, t1d dad x2, and a research volunteer for JDRF. Thanks for speaking to us, Dr. Culling!
