If you live with T1D, or know someone that does, you’ve probably heard a lot about beta cells, but have you ever tried to visualize what they look like? After conversations with multiple researchers about their work with beta cells, that’s exactly what Shelley Lowenstein did.

Blending art with science, Shelley has created multiple pieces of artwork that help to raise awareness around T1D. Her artwork has been featured as the design theme for the annual JDRF Mid-Atlantic Hope Gala for the past five years.

Doug Lowenstein serves as a consultant to JDRF and has worked on a range of projects for JDRF including leading an 18 month strategic planning process, developing new marketing and communications strategies and materials, and leading legislative and regulatory campaigns. Doug recently chronicled the story of how Tzield (teplizumab), the first disease-modifying therapy approved for use in delaying (T1D) onset, made it to market.

Shelley and Doug have been involved with JDRF since the diagnosis of their daughter, Emma, in April 2001.

The event will begin in Room 200 on the 2nd floor at 3pm. Following the presentation guests can move to room 5045 (5th floor) to view Shelley’s artwork.
