Meet Our Wyoming Advocacy Team Chair

in ,

Advocating on behalf of those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is critical to JDRF’s mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. A powerhouse team in Washington, D.C., works with volunteers across the country to secure government support for innovative T1D research.

Pivotal in that work is a group of state leaders who organize and lead other volunteer advocates in supporting JDRF’s ambitious advocacy agenda that includes securing federal funding for the Special Diabetes Program; making insulin more affordable and accessible; and fighting for protections for pre-existing conditions and other health reform principles.

The Mountain West Chapter is excited to highlight yet another volunteer who dedicates time to ensuring that the stories of the 1.45 million Americans living with T1D are heard.

Though sparsely populated, Wyoming’s Advocacy Team Chair, Beth Urlacher of Evansville, was first introduced to JDRF when her now 8-year-old son Aiden was diagnosed at 29 months and received a Bag of Hope. The family formed a One Walk team for the 2017 JDRF One Walk Denver, and Beth later signed on to serve as an Outreach Volunteer for newly diagnosed families.

“I am most passionate about insulin affordability and thrilled to be able to advocate for that at the national level through JDRF. Seeing families and individuals having to choose between bills and insulin breaks my heart and I believe that should never be a choice someone should have to make,” said Beth. “I believe so much can be accomplished through JDRF Advocacy! Just in the last few months, I’ve learned so much about the different programs and research funding that JDRF has backed and it makes me proud to be able to represent this organization. Increasing funding for research at the national level is very much within reach and I think that JDRF advocates can make a difference.”

“Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world.” – Margaret Mead
