1 in 20 – terrible odds for those living with T1D

We conquer each day with hope, often with smiles on our faces and laughter filling the room. We don’t like talking about the alarming numbers but we just can’t ignore them: 3 million Americans currently have T1D; 15,000 children and 15,000 adults are diagnosed with T1D each year; and the number of new cases is expected to rise 3% each year.

The worst number of all?

One in twenty people living with T1D – that can be an adult, a teen or a child – will die from low blood sugar. It doesn’t make sense, right? Diabetes causes high blood sugar. But everyone who lives with T1D knows that insulin is not a cure. The very treatment that is supposed keep us alive can actually be deadly. If we miscalculate a dose of insulin, we can find ourselves reaching for lots of sugar. But what if you are too late or, worse, in a deep sleep? It is a constant balancing act, every single day. In fact, many of us are more afraid of the danger of low blood sugar than of the long term complications of T1D. No, it doesn’t make sense.
