Featured Hero: Comerica Bank

Each fall, Comerica Bank bands together as coworkers and friends for the Walk to Cure Diabetes. And their team is growing. Each team member has a personal connection to T1D, either in their own families or through friends. They want to exhibit support for each other, raise awareness and raise as much money as possible. Meet a few heroes from Comerica Bank:

William & Ronalyn Burgher have a son, Nicholas, who was diagnosed with T1D last year at the age of two. They walk for him and the millions of others affected by T1D. They explain, ā€œItā€™s important to raise awareness and education so that people recognize the signs of it.ā€ Once their coworkers found out about Nicholasā€™ diagnosis, they say, ā€œWe received an outpouring of support and concernā€¦.Many people contributed generous donations to JDRF, and support to our family.ā€ They say a hero is someone, like Nicholas, who exhibits ā€œcourage and strength.ā€

Carrie Geiser has been walking for seven years because she has close friends who have T1D. She says, ā€œThe best way I felt I could help them is by raising money for [JDRF] and to help find the cure. I like that more than 80% of money raised goes towards research.ā€ She believes a hero is ā€œany child who has to grow up with and manage T1D.ā€

Devika Jagdeo has been walking since 2001 and her children look forward to Walk Day every year. She enjoys being surrounded by thousands of supporters and knowing that together they are making a difference. She says, ā€œTo me a hero is a person who strives in helping others and does not quite, no matter what.ā€
