T1D Adults “Hike Don’t Spike”

April 6, 2024, Fairfax, CA
9:30 am - 1:30 pm

April 6th – new date! This is the first in a new series of events designed for T1D adults who enjoy trail hikes in the Bay Area of ~5-8 miles at 2-2.5 mph. Join us on April 6th for a Figure 8 around Bon Tempe & Lagunitas Lakes in Fairfax. We’ll meet at the Lake Lagunitas Parking Lot. Before hitting the trail, we’ll share tips with each other on managing T1D in the great outdoors. This will be a flat but scenic 6-mile hike.

Venue

Lake Lagunitas Parking Lot

This hike will be a Figure 8 around Bon Tempe & Lagunitas Lakes starting at the Lake Lagunitas parking lot.  It will be a flat but scenic 6mi (350’ elevation gain), ~3h lakeside hike considered easy/moderate through a pleasant mix of tree-covered trails and narrow fire roads.  Expect to see ducks, newts, trout fisherman, and two big water sluices.

The area where we’ll be meeting has a good-sized parking lot with nearby bathrooms and picnic tables, but the Marin Water District charges $8 for parking so carpooling is a good idea. Hiking poles, a liter of water, layered clothes, a hat, shoes you’ve hiked in, and the usual T1D supplies and snacks you’d need for a half-day outdoors are recommended.  The hikes will be led by Joe Carlino, a T1D of 47 years and frequent hiker who loves the outdoors, works in biotech, and volunteers with JDRF as a Clinical Trial Education Volunteer.
