An Average Day for Me

By: Bryson Smith

Every day is different with T1D – but an “average” day involves a lot of carb counting and figuring out what I need to do to manage T1D. To start out the day I wake up and check my blood sugar. I put on my school clothes and go downstairs for breakfast, most of the time I eat a banana. I make sure I give enough insulin for the carbs I ate (a banana has approximately 27 carbs in it) and make my lunch. Then I leave for school – it takes about 8 – 10 minutes to get there from my house.Ā

I get to school and attend my classes until lunch. At lunch I eat everything and give insulin for all of the carbs I eat. Every day I have to figure out how many carbs are in my lunch! After I finish eating, I go play football with the boys in my class. Sometimes after lunch my blood sugar will go low so I have to treat it often with smarties candy.

When school is over I go home and have a snack then I do my homework if I have any. When I finish all of my homework, I might draw for a while or do some of my hobbies until dinner. At dinner, I have to calculate how many carbs are in what we are eating, and give the right amount of insulin for what I eat. After dinner, my family and I watch cartoons for a while and then go to bed. I check my blood sugar again before I go to bed, and will eat a snack if I am too low before I go to sleep.
