Nordstrom Beat the Bridge Spotlight: We Walk For Nora

A lot can change in a year. In 2017 Nora Milad was 7 years old and her biggest challenge was finding new Lego sets to build with her sister. 12 months later, while attending the first day of a modern dance class, Nora’s mother Kate showed up early and took her to Seattle Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with type one diabetes (T1D).

After the initial shock of Nora’s diagnosis wore off, her family sprang into action. Kate says,

“One of the first things we did after Nora’s diagnosis was to set up our Beat the Bridge team. In the midst of so much uncertainty, fear, and adjustment to our new normal, this was a very concrete action item that helped us feel like we were stepping with some purpose into this new community, ready to help carry the torch in fundraising for a cure.”

In their first year participating in Beat the Bridge, We Walk for Nora recruited 12 teammates and together they raised a staggering $24,000 for T1D research. The secret to their success? “For family and friends, donating to our team was a tangible way they could support us in both our personal struggle with this disease and in helping fund a fantastic organization’s research and outreach efforts.”

We Walk for Nora would like to invite you to join them at Husky Stadium on Sunday, May 19 for the 37th Annual Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes. “The day of the event was a powerful one! Taking all those steps alongside our fellow T1D warriors was a profound experience – one we’re looking forward to in 2019!” You can register for the Beat the Bridge at BeattheBridge.org. Don’t forget there’s an event for the entire family, an 8k Race, 3-Mile Family Fun Walk, 1 Mile Fun Run, and a diaper derby!
