JDRF Applauds Mark Andrews of the NFL Baltimore Ravens for his Quick Thinking and Willingness to Help Fellow Passenger

Statement from JDRF, the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization

“JDRF applauds Mark Andrews of the NFL Baltimore Ravens for his quick thinking and willingness to help a fellow passenger on a recent flight.

More than 1.4 million Americans live with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that causes the pancreas to make very little insulin or none at all. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a dangerous complication of type 1 diabetes. Symptoms can include labored breathing and confusion as well as shakiness and nausea. Severe hypoglycemia can cause difficulty walking or seeing clearly, feeling disoriented, inability to swallow, loss of consciousness, and seizures. Being prepared with supplies like test strips, snacks, glucose tablets or glucagon, a hormone used to raise blood sugar administered via injection or nasal spray, can make an important difference if someone is experiencing hypoglycemia.

In times of need, actions like Mark’s serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of type 1 diabetes awareness and preparedness. We commend his steadfast commitment to making a positive impact on and off the field.”
