JDRF Mourns the Passing of Dr. Gerald Fishbone, 1934-2023

JDRF is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Gerald Fishbone on January 16th, 2023. Dr. Fishbone was a tireless type 1 diabetes (T1D) champion who was a part of JDRF from the very beginning. He and his wife, Marilyn, who founded the New Haven, CT Chapter, spent decades working to improve the lives of people with T1D, like their son, Scott, and their grandson, Harris. Dr. Fishbone served in many roles at JDRF, including Chair of the JDRF International Board of Directors (IBOD), Medical Advisor, Research Committee member, and donor.

He leaves behind a legacy of service which is being carried forward by his children and grandchildren. His daughter, Lisa Fishbone Wallack, sits on the JDRF IBOD; she recently finished a term as Vice Chair. She also served as President of the Greater New England Chapter. His son, Scott, is a dedicated JDRF volunteer leader who currently serves on the Northern New Jersey and Rockland County Chapter Board and has spent years advocating for T1D research with federal legislators.

Dr. Fishbone played a tremendous role at JDRF and in T1D, and he will be deeply missed.

– JDRF CEO Aaron Kowalski, Ph.D.
