Tricks and Treats for a Happy Halloween

in

Fall in Colorado means summer days becoming crisp and cool, fall festivals and corn mazes, and a seemingly endless supply of Halloween candy. Its a time of year that bring joy to some and dread to others.  For families living with T1D, and every complex decision that comes with it, Halloween can be a time of stress, heartache, frustration and worry – but it doesn’t have to be.  With a different perspective, and a few tricks to counter the treats, Halloween can be enjoyable and fun for everyone!

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to celebrate this spooky holiday. Some families choose to indulge their sweet tooth and stock up on low snacks for the winter months. Others look for alternative way to celebrate the holiday.  Some families put up a teal pumpkin supporting the Teal Pumpkin Project and alternative candy options, and others introduce their family to The Switch Witch, a friendly fall colleague of Elf on the Shelf switching candy out for healthier treats and fun toys each Halloween.    No matter your choice, it’s important to choose a plan that works for your family.

JDRF offers a few “tricks” to help you better enjoy the “treats” of the season.

  • Communicate: Ask your family members how they want to spend the holiday.   Maybe it’s trick or treating, or maybe it includes a visit to a local farm or pumpkin patch, or having a Halloween  party with friends.
  • Be flexible and negotiate: Remember that Halloween is one night out of the year and sometimes, saying “yes” to candy (in moderation) can help everyone feel included.
  • Offer Alternatives: Some kids will enjoy trading candy for a new toy or a sleepover with a friend. Get creative! You might be surprised to find that the act of trick or treating is more fun for your child than actually eating the candy.

Of course, Halloween isn’t just for kids. People of all ages with T1D face the same challenges when it comes to all sugar-filled and focused holidays and the same suggestions apply.   Communicate, be flexible, and offer alternatives.

JDRF has complied this Quick Reference Guide for Halloween Candy carb counts to make things a bit easier for you this season.

Remember, you are NOT alone!  Ask to be connected with a JDRF Outreach Volunteer who understands exactly how difficult, complex and frustrating this season can be.

We wish you a fun, safe and magic filled fall and Halloween season.
