The JDRF Houston One Walk sponsored by Lexicon Pharmaceuticals on Saturday November 3^rd was a slam dunk success!  The sports related theme for this year, Team Type 1, highlighted the team spirit of the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community, as well as the strength and endurance of individuals living with type 1 diabetes.  Approximately 7,000 people gathered at NRG Park and were treated to a day of perfect weather, fun activities, and unparalleled team spirit.

ABC13’s Elita Loresca served as emcee for the day and pumped up the crowd with help from the Houston Texans Cheerleaders and TORO during the opening ceremony presented by Sequent Energy Management!  Grand Marshal, Lulu Aklestad of Team Skip to My Lulu, was also on hand to excite the crowd and kicked off the walk with a ribbon cutting at the start line.

“Rookies” or newly diagnosed families and first time walkers were recognized with an official rookie baseball cap and encouraged to lean on their new friends in the type 1 community as they work to adjust to a new normal.

The event surpassed its $829,000 fundraising goal under the leadership of the 2018 Walk Chair, Jay Rosenfeld and the Corporate Walk Chair, Chuck Bowman, Group Executive Vice President at Amegy Bank.  Amegy Bank presented a check to the JDRF Houston Gulf Coast Chapter for $106,000 which was raised through sponsorship and team fundraising.  For a complete list of all of our amazing sponsors who made this day possible, visit walk.jdrf.org/Houston.
