 “A conversation with PGA Member Charlie Epps, The Golf Doctor”

 

 Charlie is perhaps best known as “The Golf Doctor” – currently serving as host of “Charlie Epps Golf Hour” on ESPN 97.5 KFNC-FM locally, and SB Nation Radio nationally Saturday mornings at 8AM Houston Central Time. He was the first PGA Professional in the Houston area to air a regularly scheduled golf program on the radio (1987). He has written numerous instruction articles for local, regional and national publications.

Charlie currently works with the 2007 U.S. Open Champion and 2009 Masters Champion, Angel Cabrera, and was the instructor of five-time tour winner, Blaine McCallister. He produced over 100 golf instruction television shows in the 1990’s.

Charlie learned the game of golf in Cordoba, Argentina under Jose Jurado and Alberto Flores. Roberto de Vicenzo was his boyhood idol while living in Argentina from the age of 8 until college age. Charlie began his teaching career while he was in the U.S Army 1969-71. He began his career as a club professional at the La Manga Campo de Golf Resort in Spain in 1971-1972. He first attracted attention in 1972-1973 when he attempted the PGA tour. He played in the US Open in 1976 and 1978 and in the PGA Championship in 1983 and 1986.

Epps served as Head Golf Professional at Houston Country Club for 14 years from 1975-1989 and then from 1989 to 1993 Epps served on the Golf Digest teaching staff. In 1993 Charlie was asked by Jim Flick to help him start the Nicklaus/Flick Golf Schools. In 1996 he became the Head Golf Professional at Pine Forest Country Club in Houston, Texas. In 2002, Charlie was hired by Redstone Golf Management as Director of Golf Marketing. In 2014, Charlie continued his teaching of the game of golf all over the world.

 Charlie Epps has been extremely active in the PGA serving as Section President, Section Vice President, and Education Chairman. At the national level he has served as a member of the National Junior Golf Academy, the National Education Committee and the Clubs for Kids Committee. He has been the recipient of numerous PGA awards and honors.
