Highlights and More: TypeOneNation Summit 2020

The JDRF Western PA TypeOneNation Summit is officially next month on March 21st at the Carnegie Science Center! TypeOneNation Summit is our annual educational summit that brings together all within the type 1 diabetes community. We’re so excited to meet all of you for a day full of education and connection!

From Eric Tozer (Fellow T1D, World Marathon Challenge runner) to Andy Rakeman (AVP of Research at JDRF) to Rob Howe (T1D Social Media Influencer) and so many more, we have an incredible lineup of speakers set to join us this year. They’ll all lead breakout session topics including living with a diabetic alert dog, T1D at school, a tech update from our friends at Tidepool, and more. In addition, we’ll have a very special breakout session led by Rob Howe featuring several incredible fellow T1Ds who have been living with type 1 diabetes for over 40 years!

Morning Keynote: Overcoming Obstacles with T1D
Presented by Eric Tozer, Fellow T1D, World Marathon Challenge Runner

In 2019, Eric became the first person living with T1D to complete the World Marathon Challenge, running 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 consecutive days! This session aims to provide inspiration and education to those who are impacted by T1D.

‘A Full Life with T1D’
Presented by Rob Howe, Fellow T1D, Social Media Influencer
with Joe Dowd, Julie McCutcheon, and Robert Moses

Rob Howe will be recording a podcast with three of our friends from Western PA who have been living with T1D for over 40 years each. Hear how treatments have changed over time and how they have lived happy, healthy lives while having T1D!Ā 

‘Life with Blaze’ – Living with a Diabetic Alert Dog
Presented by Katherine Wallace and Blaze

Meet Katherine and Blaze! They will go over the pros and cons when considering a diabetic alert dog and the process to get one.

Afternoon Keynote: JDRF Research Update
Presented by Andy Rakeman, AVP of Research at JDRF

Our focus is on finding a cure for type 1 diabetes; until we do, the advancements weā€™re making in research every day ease the burden of those living with T1D. From Beta Cell Regeneration to Immunotherapy and Prevention, Dr. Rakeman plays a vital role in overseeing important research projects and moving progress forward towards a cure.

Presented by Eric Luhrs from Tidepool

Tidepool is currently working with all three major pump companies (Tandem, Insulet, and Medtronic) to make controlling your CGM and pump with your phone a reality. See how this future phone application will allow your devices to talk to one another and make automatic adjustments!

‘Mental Health: Overcoming T1D Burnout in Adults’Ā 
‘Mental Health: Overcoming T1D Burnout in Youth’
Presented by Allyson Hughes, PhD

Allyson is a senior research scientist at T1D Exchange in Boston, MA and a fellow T1D. She has conducted extensive research pertaining to the diabetes online community and patient reported outcomes in diabetes. She will focus on how to overcome burnout and make mental health a priority in both of her sessions – one specialized for adults with T1D and one for youth with T1D.

‘Living in the T1D Renaissance’
Presented by Rob Howe, Fellow T1D, Social Media Influencer

We’re living at the intersection of diabetes technology & social media connectivity, which make today the best time to live with diabetes (if there is such a thing). Rob will talk about the clinical & psychosocial outcomes of being involved with the T1D online community.

‘T1D at School’
Presented by Lisa Popovich, RN, CSN, MeD
and Aimee Markilinksi

Join a panel of certified school nurses as they discuss tips for sending your child with T1D to school. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about dosing at school, what it means if your child misses some class time and more.

Early Bird tickets are on sale through February 21st, 2020 and after that, tickets will be at full price through March 14th or until all tickets are sold out. Please note that this event is expected to sell out, so be sure to get your tickets early! Absolutely no tickets will be sold after 3/14 in order to give the venue an accurate headcount.
