Our daughter Jordyn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 6th grade while we were in Texas for a gymnastics competition. We noticed she had been eating and drinking more frequently, losing weight, and was very tired. My nurse brain knew it was T1D but my mom brain didnā€™t want to believe it. Even my 27 yearsā€™ of experience as a Registered Nurse could not prepare me for the challenge ahead. Our entire familyā€™s lives have never been the same since that day.

Meet the Spika Family

Spika Family

Our son Luke was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 2 Ā½ years ago at age 7. This has been life-changing for him and for us as a family. As family doctors, Dave and I have seen the challenges that people living with type 1 diabetes face, both on a day-to-day basis and with some of the long-term complications that can occur. It is a disease that never takes a day off and requires constant attention. There has not been a day that has gone by since Lukeā€™s diagnosis that we have not had conversations about blood sugars, carb counting and how to handle upcoming events, school days, sports, etc. There have also been many of those conversations during the night, when we are up checking blood sugars and just checking on Luke. As parents, we would love to see a day that every birthday party, sleepover, camping trip or sporting event did not involve worries about carbohydrate counting, insulin dosing, and high and low sugars.

On Saturday, February 20, at the JDRF Celebrity Gala there will be a moment when the room is still and the story of hope unfolds. Fund A Cure is the opportunity to change the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Your 100% tax-deductible contribution will drive research toward therapies to improve lives and one day lead to a cure. Donate today!
