Research Spotlight Recap

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Research Spotlight on November 13th.  We hope you found the evening to be informative and exciting!  We would again like to thank Doug Lowenstein for providing us with a fantastic update on the research JDRF is funding! If you weren’t able to attend we’ve outlined the three things Doug is most excited about moving forward.

  1. The Artificial Pancreas Technology.  JDRF brought this to market and continues to research and make improvements, our technology is only getting better.  It has created a positive impact on blood glucose control.
  2. Beta Cell Encapsulation.  This is an outpatient procedure where a device containing Beta Cells in a protected packet is implanted.  The packet allows the cells to integrate into the blood without being attacked.  When successful, a person with T1D can go 12-18 months without carb counting or even blood glucose checks, largely reducing the risk of complications.
  3. Working towards a cure.  We are learning more about what causes T1D every day.  The more we know about what causes it the better we can treat and eliminate it.  We currently have human clinical trials working to restore beta cell function.  Getting closer every day.
