The 2022 Ride season is upon us and we are so excited to be back in-person this year! If there’s ever been a time to join the Ride to Cure Diabetes, this is it! Join Team Wisconsin by registering today!

JDRF Ride is for all cyclists — beginner or experienced — who share a commitment to JDRF’s mission. Your registration is your doorway into a ride experience unlike any other. With our stunning destination rides across the country, you’ll have the chance to join fellow riders for an unforgettable weekend experience.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing stories of riders from our team and why they ride! Here’s Hannah’s story:

Provide a short intro of yourself, T1D journey and connection to JDRF.

I am Hannah and I have been a Type 1 for 25 years. My dad was also a Type 1 for 44 years.  I first started doing stuff with JDRF shortly after I was diagnosed, doing a walk here and there and participating in other activities.  I am married and have a 3 year old daughter named Audrey and 2 cats.  I enjoy being outdoors, reading books, and spending time with my family.

Why did you first decide to participate in Ride?

I first heard of the ride and attended a pre ride get together at the Errthum’s house in 2012.  After learning about the ride and meeting other potential riders I made the decision that it was something I wanted to do on my $100 bike from Walmart. It didn’t matter to me how far I went, it was about the cause.

What is the most rewarding aspect of participating in the Ride?

The empowerment that it gives me and the sense of belonging.  Not only am I surrounded by other Type 1s but by people who are supporting the cause of finding a cure.  From the other riders to the coaches, you never feel left out.

What helps you feel prepared for the Ride?

The fun training rides with the group. Kathy encouraging me to just keep pedaling 🙂

As we go back to in-person events, what are some of your highlights throughout Ride weekend that you are looking forward to?

The dinners.  It is great to see the amount of people who are there to support me and ride alongside me.  The training sessions the day before. I learned how to change a tire on my bike for the first time.  Showing my team spirit.  Mile 23. After my dad passed away due to complications from diabetes 5 years ago, this mile took on much more of a meaning for me. We just have so much fun throughout the whole weekend.

Why would you encourage others to join the Ride to Cure Diabetes?

You really need to experience it to understand just how amazing it is.  I can tell you over and over how great it makes you feel, but until you have done it yourself you wont truly know.  It really is an amazing time.
