Dr. Susanne Cabrera MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She directs the clinical and translational research arm of the Max McGee Diabetes Research Center and is the Director of the Childrenās Wisconsin Diabetes Program. Dr. Cabreraās clinical/translational research has focused on the role of environmental mediators of intestinal inflammation in promoting T1D pathogenesis in those with genetic susceptibility. She has received funding from the JDRF, ADA, and NIH to investigate the role of probiotics, gluten, and non-nutritive sweeteners in immune dysregulation in those at-risk of developing diabetes. Currently, she is conducting an NIH funded randomized control clinical trial to determine the impact of a single-strain probiotic on beta-cell function and systemic inflammation in individuals recently diagnosed with T1D. Dr. Cabrera has been the site Principal Investigator of TrialNet, a clinical trial consortium funded in part by the JDRF. Through her long-standing work in TrialNet and clinical research, Dr. Cabrera was able to quickly lead a team to implement teplizumab therapy in the delay of T1D onset in those at high-risk. She also developed Childrenās Wisconsin protocols for screening and monitoring individuals at risk for diabetes and works with the JDRF to broaden screening efforts to families living with T1D. Dr. Cabreraās work as a clinical researcher and clinician has informed more recent investigations into equitable research participation to best reflect the populations affected by the disease or condition under study, as a means of reducing health outcome disparities. Cabrera is the Co-Chair of the TrialNet Underrepresented Minority Engagement Committee, focused on enhancing the recruitment and retention of historically underrepresented minorities into TrialNet studies.
