On July 21-22, JDRF co-hosted a workshop with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that focused on the state of the art in the research and development of an artificial pancreas. The two-day workshop brought together some of the world's top scientists, regulators, industry representatives, and others with a connection to type 1 diabetes to discuss the progress and remaining challenges in the development of closed-loop systems that will automatically regulate blood sugar in people with diabetes.
The sessions dramatically highlighted advances that have been made since the previous conference in December 2005 in tying together continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps with sophisticated algorithms to replicate the function of a human pancreas, including ongoing human clinical trials, the development of complex algorithms that ensure these next generation devices will be both safe and effective, and the creation of an in silico model of type 1 diabetes in humans, that can speed clinical trial testing of proposed control algorithms.
