For six straight years, the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School has repeatedly been JDRF’s top-ranked school in the country for fall walks.  This year, the HIES faculty, staff, students and friends set a new record raising $76,567 for type 1 diabetes research! The community service-minded, independent school nearly doubled their fundraising efforts from the year before.

“JDRF  is extremely grateful for the continuous outpouring of support we receive from the students, parents and faculty of Holy Innocents’,” said Trey Moore, Executive Director of the JDRF Georgia Chapter.

 Anna Kampfe, a senior at HIES and a Type 1 Diabetic,  served as team captain for the latest Walk, on October 18, 2014.

“Juvenile Diabetes is not a game. I volunteer and fundraise because I believe that a single dollar could lead to curing millions of children who cannot eat without having to be their own doctors. While I have seen many successful walks and smiling faces, my favorite memory is very recent. At my school to raise money for the JDRF we do a pay for a non-uniform day every year. People come from carpool in the mornings and pay to wear clothes other than their uniforms. Usually it is about two dollars, but every once a while people donate just because.

“This year I remember sitting outside asking for payments and almost every other person who donated gave extra money. People were handing me up to ten-dollar bills because they just wanted to.  I remember asking one of the students in my senior class if he was sure he wanted to donate the extra seven dollars this year. He just smiled and said “of course”. This year people seemed to really understand that all I want is for my friends and I to be normal teenagers who do not depend on machines to live. Everyone was so kind and donated their amount. No one tried to slip by. The generosity really touched me because it gave me hope. It let me know that I am not alone and that people understand that a cure can happen. As the day wore on, more friends volunteered to sit at the tables with me and collect money. That day in October was a great day.

“My final year as a student at my school has been amazing as far as fundraising goes. We have more then doubled our goals and past amounts. It is all thanks to the people at my school, my generous peers.” – Anna Kampfe
