Local Woman Receives 75-Year Diabetes Milestone Medal

When Mary was diagnosed with T1D at age 7, finger stick testing didn’t exist, glass syringes were boiled to sterilize before administering insulin and blood glucose numbers were a guessing game as urine testing simply delivered a high or low reading. Mary’s discipline, positive attitude and perseverance with her T1D management early on has led to a happy and healthy life. Last month, Mary was recognized for 75 years of living with T1D and presented with a medal from Dr. Elizabeth Seaquist at the University of Minnesota.

What’s Mary’s advice for living well with T1D?

“Take advantage of all the wonderful tools we have today, stay positive, and when you get tired of all the management, focus on what makes you happy in life.”

And, Mary has much to make her happy. Throughout her 83 years, Mary has completed college and grad school, lived and traveled abroad, has been married to her husband, Don, for 61 years, has raised three adopted children and enjoys four granddaughters and six great-grandchildren. Congratulations, Mary, on living well with T1D for 75 years!
