2020 TypeOneNation Summit (for those caring for children with T1D) Breakout Sessions

In addition to our keynote speakers and mission updates, we are pleased to offer the following break-out sessions during our TypeOneNation Summit morning programming for those caring for children with T1D:

Breakout Session 1

T1D Champions: All Day. Every Day.
Hear from a panel of local T1D Champions who will share how they’ve conquered their challenges and found balance in living with T1D. You will leave inspired after hearing their stories of overcoming bullying, competing in collegiate and professional athletics, and a blogger who looks at T1D in the context of “real life.”All audiences would benefit from this program.

Psycho-social Guidance: Because Diabetes Stinks
This session is geared toward parents or caregivers who would like guidance on psycho-social barriers to diabetes care. Some of the topics that will be covered will be:

  • Social and physical challenges faced by children
  • Eliminating the blame and shame
  • Transferring responsibility and empowering your T1D child
  • Techniques on how to better support your T1D child and encouraging positive change

Intro to Technology
Geared toward parents and caregivers that want to learn more about technology and T1D, including the benefits of using technology and the transition from multiple daily injections to pumping. It will also include an informational overview of the different pumps, continuous glucose monitors and their differences.

What’s On Your Plate?
Ever wonder aboutĀ healthier alternatives to treat lows, how different foods impact blood glucose levels or want helpful tips on eating out with T1D? These and a variety of other nutrition based topics will be covered in this session.

Teen Talk: Taking T1D to College
Teen Talk is only open to teens ages 14-19. It’s never too early to start thinking about college! The College Diabetes Network from The College of New Jersey will offer real-life tips and suggestions on how to prepare to take T1D to college. Teen Talk will offer a safe environment for teens to ask questions about requesting accommodations, living with a roommate, transitioning to life on your own, and more. A separate Taking T1D to College will be offered for parents during Breakout Session 2.

Kids Korner
Kids Korner is only open to children ages 5-13 years of age. This is an activity-based program where the kids can go and have fun while their parents and extended family are able to focus on the speakers. Children will be in Kids Korner during the talks, butĀ will be with parents for breakfast and lunch. For more information, please click here.Ā Ā 

Breakout Session 2

Taking T1D to College (Parent Edition)
It’s never too early to think about your child’s transition to college. Join the College Diabetes Network from The College of New Jersey to hear how their first-hand experiences of partnering with their parents for a successful college experience. Parents of college students will also be on hand for this session.

JDRF’s Health Policy Priorities
Learn more about JDRF’s current advocacy priorities, including:

  • Coverage 2 Control
  • Navigating Health Insurance
  • The Drug Distribution Chain and its impact on pricing

You’ll understand how JDRF and our chapter members play a role to execute positive change in health policy and how you can get involved as an advocate.

Let’s Get Techy
Gary Scheiner, MS, CDE, author of Think Like a Pancreas, will provide an update of current technology and share on what’s in the pipeline. He will also serve as a facilitator for aĀ tech talk with device manufacturers about their current devices and what’s in the pipeline. Audience members will have the opportunity to raise questions to Gary and the panel members.

PEAK (Performance in Exercise and Knowledge)
PEAK is a unique outreach initiative making a life-changing difference for thousands of people with T1D who, prior to the launch of PEAK, didn’t receive clear guidance on safely pursuing exercise. PEAK provides education on the environmental, dietary, and physiologic elements that affect physical activity in those with T1D.
