Our Walk, Our Way!

Team O’Grady includes (from l. to r.) mom Justine, sister Justine, Kaitlin and dad John.

“The JDRF One Walk is more than just a day full of fun, laughter, and pride. It is a glimmer of hope into a bright, healthy future for those living with type 1 diabetes. It gives me the optimism to push through the hard days knowing that advances in diabetes management are made possible with the help of these Walks and that organizations like JDRF are working diligently towards finding a cure for type 1 diabetes,” Kaitlin O’Grady-Percorino says.

Team O’Grady has been participating in the JDRF One Walk since 2009, when Kaitlin was diagnosed at the age of 18 and later expanded when her father was diagnosed at the age of 60. So far they have raised over $40,000 towards our mission.

This year, more than ever, the O’Grady’s are asking you to join us – in whatever way you’re comfortable. Our JDRF One Walk will have both virtual and “Destination Celebrations” to bring a close to your One Walk fundraising campaign this year. Your Walk will be celebrated Your Way!

While we’re still not returning to the traditional Walk experience of the past, we know you are craving in-person interaction with our T1D community and want to celebrate all of your hard work in support of JDRF’s mission.

That’s why we are offering two “Destination Celebrations” on October 24: Turtle Back Zoo in Essex County and Six Flags Great Adventure in Ocean County. Teams can earn free admission tickets by reaching fundraising levels.

There will be no official ceremonies, walk routes, or gatherings inside either park but you can still show your JDRF pride by wearing team t-shirts, JDRF One Walk t-shirts, or blue!

Both parks remain open to the general public, so if you’re not comfortable yet, don’t let that discourage you. You can still walk anywhere, anytime…your way! Create a walk route in your neighborhood, challenge your team with a long hike at a local park or beach, or walk inside on your treadmill. If you decide to walk Your Way, let us know so we can cheer you on!

Whenever and however you choose to participate, October 24 will be a day for our community to celebrate our stories, recognize our accomplishments, and walk to change the future for everyone living with T1D. JDRF will be celebrating with you on Facebook and Instagram, and sharing stories throughout the day.
