Thirteen members of the Greensboro marketing agency are fundraising for and riding in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes in Amelia Island, Florida, on October 5

Greensboro, North Carolina, September 27, 2019 – JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter announced today that SFW, a Greensboro-based marketing agency, is supporting the vision of a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D) by signing on as the chapter’s first-ever corporate partner for the Ride to Cure Diabetes.

Thirteen SFW riders will participate in the 100-mile JDRF Ride on October 3-6, 2019, in Amelia Island, Florida. The SFW riders are fundraising, training, and riding with 24 additional members of JDRF’s Piedmont Triad cycling team. With a little more than a week to go, JDRF’s local team has raised over $100,000 to fund research to cure T1D and improve the lives of kids and adults living with this disease.

For more than 10 years, SFW has integrated cycling into its company culture by encouraging staff to take part in afternoon rides, Bike to Work Week, and its own annual Ride to Raleigh (from Greensboro). Many SFW employees have family members or friends with type 1 diabetes (T1D); joining forces with JDRF to fundraise for T1D research by cycling is a natural extension of SFW’s corporate culture.

“We are excited to be the first corporate sponsor in the Triad of the JDRF Ride,” said Ged King, SFW CEO and avid cyclist. “We’ve had so much fun training with the other members of the Piedmont Triad cycling team over the past six months, and we hope to encourage more businesses in the area to support and participate in JDRF Rides going forward.”

“Our entire JDRF Piedmont Triad Ride team has been inspired by SFW’s commitment to train more diligently, pedal more powerfully, and fundraise with a vengeance,” said Eleanor Schaffner-Mosh, Executive Director of JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter. “The SFW team has seen firsthand how devastating type 1 diabetes can be, and they are determined to fund research to cure this disease and improve the lives of everyone affected by it. SFW is a company of T1D champions who also love cycling, and we are thrilled that they are riding with us.”

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood-sugar levels. T1D develops when the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. The cause of this attack is still being researched; however, scientists believe the cause may have genetic and environmental components. T1D affects children and adults, and people can be diagnosed at any age. As of now, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent T1D, and there is no cure.

About JDRF: JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement, and our vision of a world without T1D.
