“Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a 24/7, lifelong disease. T1D is an autoimmune disease that can’t be prevented. It’s different from Type 2 diabetes, which is a metabolic syndrome that may be prevented or delayed through diet and exercise,” explained Eleanor Schaffner-Mosh, Executive Director of JDRF’s Piedmont Triad Chapter. “National Diabetes Awareness Month gives us the opportunity to create an even more supportive community by shining a light on T1D and the people—of all ages—who live with this disease. I look forward to seeing many new and familiar faces at our NDAM events throughout November.”

JDRF has launched the “I’m the Type” campaign to spread awareness about life with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) while celebrating the strength and resilience of individuals affected by this disease. Visitors to ImtheType.com are invited to share their personal T1D stories, use a variety of campaign social media filters, take actions on behalf of the T1D community, and use the “T1D Footprint Generator” to help others understand the cumulative burden of living with this disease. To highlight the many research and therapy advances, visitors can use the newly launched “T1D Treatment Throughout the Years Timeline” to see what T1D was like in a particular year.

About Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic, life-threatening autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults at any age. Its onset is sudden and is not related to diet or lifestyle. In T1D, the body’s immune system destroys cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, meaning the body produces little to no insulin to regulate blood sugar and get energy from food. T1D requires rigorous 24/7 monitoring of blood glucose levels—even overnight—to avoid potentially lethal highs and lows in blood sugar, as well as other devastating complications like kidney, eye and nerve diseases.

About JDRF: JDRF is the leading global organization funding Type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2 billion in research funding since our inception. Founded by a group of parents of children with T1D in 1970, JDRF is an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement, and our vision of a world without T1D.
