ALL OF US: T1D Won’t Stop Us!

Editor’s note: This is the third post in the series, “ALL OF US,” by Chelsea Lugone and family, who will share their T1D journey onstage at the 2024 JDRF Central PA Gala on May 18th. T1D Won’t Stop Us!

One of our family’s favorite pastimes is getting out of the house and getting active whether through sports or a spontaneous trip to the park or Sky Zone, our local indoor trampoline park.

Of course, one of the more challenging aspects of life with T1D is how activity impacts glucose.  It requires us to be as proactive as possible.  We look at glucose levels, insulin on board, think about food on board, the intensity/duration of the activity… and do we have everything we need?!  It’s really about planning the best we can and trying to make the best decision we can in the moment!

If only we had a glucose crystal ball instead of a magic 8 ball for questions like: “Should I use activity mode and eat half a pack of Skittles…?” All signs point to “YES”!!!  We follow through with what we think is best and sometimes we get stuck with a low or high anyway—so frustrating!

Still, despite the challenges and all of the lows and the highs, we are always prepared.  We try to learn, adapt, and NEVER let diabetes stop us from doing what we love!

  • What are your favorite T1D tips for dealing with sports or increased activity?
  • Have you had any major successes or T1D frustrations regarding activity?
  • We would love to see photos of you or your loved one with T1D being active—please share!

We would love for you to share your story.  Our hope is to share all of our stories at the 2024 JDRF Central PA Gala because this is about #ALLOFUS.  For the chance for your story to be included on signage at the Gala, e-mail abreining@jdrf.org and/or tag your story on social media with: #ALLOFUS #JDRFCentralPAGala #JDRFWestCentralPA
